Family Forest Art

Designed for 8 to 12 year old’s and their families.

In this program we will look at nature in a new way. We’ll make close observations of the shapes and patterns we find in nature, and then use these observations to create our own forest art.

Our guided walk will begin with a brief introduction to examples of shapes and patterns. As we walk (~1/2 km) to our ‘art space’ in the forest, we’ll look for examples of these shapes and patterns in nature.

At the art space, we’ll be creating mandalas* — a symmetrical design that incorporates repeating designs and is typically circular. Rather than using paints and paper, we’ll use natural materials to create the mandalas. These natural materials will be collected by the organizers outside the park or in special permit locations within the park and will be returned to those places after the event.

As these mandalas are not permanent (and therefore temporal/ephemeral), caregivers may want to document them via photography. Before leaving the art space, we’ll all dismantle the mandalas in preparation to return the natural materials to their found locations.

To learn more about this kind of art, here are a few links to artists that do these types of “ephemeral” or “temporal” art:
